Overseas Electors
British citizens (which includes eligible Irish citizens and citizens of the Crown Dependencies) my register as overseas electors if they are now living abroad, providing they are:
- a person who was previously registered to vote in the UK, either before they left the UK or as an overseas elector - known as the previously registered condition
- a person who was previous resident in the UK (including those who left the UK before they were old enough to register to vote) - known as the previously resident condition
Applicants must apply to register as an overseas elector in respect of the address where they were last registered to vote in the UK or, if they have never been registered, the last address at which they were resident in the UK.
How you can vote from overseas
Postal vote
You can opt to vote by post; however, please consider the time the postal vote will take to reach you and then be returned to us by the 10pm deadline on election day. If it does not arrive in time or gets lost in the post, you cannot then change your method of voting. By law, all postal votes must be posted out; we are not allowed to email them to electors.
Proxy voting
If you are not based in the UK, you can appoint someone to vote on your behalf (see below). As an overseas elector, we advise you to apply to vote by proxy if possible. Your appointed proxy has to attend the polling station you were last registered to vote at, so make sure that the person you appoint is familiar with where you would have previously voted.
