Examples of financial assessments for care provided in your home or the community

Example 1 - Aged 18 to pension age

Client A is 22 years of age, has a learning difficulty and lives in supported accommodation. The cost to the Council for arranging Client A’s care and support is £391.95 per week.

  • Universal Credit: £167.96
  • PIP Daily Living Component Enhanced: £108.55
  • PIP Mobility Component Enhanced: £75.75

Total = £352.26

Section 4: Household costs (weekly)

  • Client A has no household costs

Section 5: Disability-related expenditure

  • Laundry and bedding allowance: £6.42
  • Clothing and footwear allowance: £6.18

Total = £12.60

Section 6: Disregarded income

  • ‘No night care element’ = £35.90
  • PIP Mobility Component Enhanced: £75.75

Total = £111.65

Assessment calculation:

  • Total weekly income: £352.26
  • Less weekly housing costs: N/A
  • Less weekly disability-related expenditure: £12.60
  • Less disregarded weekly income: £111.65
  • Less weekly Minimum Income Guarantee: £160.30

Assessed weekly contribution = £67.71

Client A has been financially assessed as being able to pay £67.71 per week towards £391.95 weekly cost of their care and support. This is their assessed weekly contribution.

Example 2 - Over pension age

Client B is 76 years of age, and lives in extra care housing with their partner. Only the income of Client B will be included in the financial assessment. The cost to the Council for arranging Client B’s care and support is £274.73 per week.

Section 2: Savings and investments

Although Client B has savings of £9,500, the sum is below the lower limit of £14,250 meaning their savings are fully disregarded in the financial assessment calculations.

Section 3: Income (weekly)

  • State Retirement Pension: £203.93
  • Guaranteed Pension Credit: £72.73 (this is Client B’s 50% of this benefit)
  • Savings Pension Credit: £9.52 (this is Client B’s 50% of this benefit)
  • Private/work Pension: £17.22
  • Attendance Allowance: £108.55

Partner’s income that is not included in the assessment for Client B:

  • State Retirement Pension: £154.17
  • Guaranteed Pension Credit: £72.73 (this is partners 50% of this benefit)
  • Savings Pension Credit: £9.52 (this is partners 50% of this benefit)
  • Disability Living Allowance care middle rate: £72.65
  • Disability Living Allowance mobility higher rate: £75.75
