Children missing from education
CME are children of compulsory school age who are not registered pupils at a school and are not receiving suitable education otherwise than at a school. This includes children who are awaiting a school place and children in receipt of unsuitable education, including those children local authorities are supporting to place into suitable education.
Some of the reasons for CME can occur when pupils fail to start a new school or appropriate education provision, or they fail to re-register at a new school when they move into the borough.
These ‘missing’ children can be amongst the most vulnerable, it is essential that all services work together to identify and re-engage these children back into appropriate education as quickly as possible.
