Drug and alcohol misuse
Drug and alcohol misuse/dependency is when someone takes drugs or alcohol in a way that harms themselves, their loved ones, or their community. Drugs include illegal drugs, "legal highs," and prescribed and non-prescribed medications. Misuse refers to using drugs or alcohol in a way that leads to social, psychological, physical, or legal problems.
Drug and alcohol misuse/dependency can lead to self-neglect. Self-neglect is when someone does not take care of themselves, such as not taking care of their personal hygiene, health, or surroundings.
