Emotional and psychological abuse

Psychological abuse is a form of abuse characterized by a person subjecting or exposing another person to a behaviour that may result in psychological trauma.

Support for victims

Psychological abuse can be very damaging, and it can be difficult to break free from it. However, there is help available.

If you are experiencing emotional or psychological abuse, it is important to seek support from a trusted friend, family member, or professional. A therapist or counsellor can help you to understand what is happening and to develop coping mechanisms. They can also help you to develop a safety plan if you are in danger.

Please see section on domestic abuse for further details.

Barriers to seeking help

There are a number of barriers that can prevent people from seeking help for emotional and psychological abuse. These barriers can include:

Fear of the abuser

Victims may be afraid of what the abuser will do if they find out that they are seeking help.

Shame and guilt

Victims may feel ashamed or guilty about what is happening to them. They may think that they deserve the abuse or that they are doing something wrong.

Lack of knowledge or resources

Victims may not know where to turn for help or what resources are available to them.

Practical barriers

Victims may face practical barriers to seeking help, such as lack of transportation or childcare.
