Town Twinning started after the Second World War when the rebuilding of links between countries was vital to fostering friendship and understanding between cultures and former foes as an act of peace and reconciliation.
Originally, twin towns were chosen on a like-for-like basis of population, ethnicity and employment sector and offered the opportunity to understand different cultures and ways of life. There are more than 30,000 town twinning links between communities from different parts of Europe and beyond.
Stadt Moers
Knowsley Council has been twinned with Stadt Moers in Germany since April 1980. Moers is situated in the Wesel district in one of the most populous states in Germany, the North Rhine-Westphalia. Moers has a long and rich history dating back more than 700 years. The 103,000-plus inhabitants enjoy a high quality of life because the town can boast extremely attractive green areas as well as a particularly strong economic location on account of its central position at the interchange of three motorways and rapid connections to the neighbouring areas.
