Other types of weddings

Church of England weddings

To arrange a Church of England wedding, please contact your local vicar.

Weddings at other religious buildings

If you are planning to marry in a different religious building, you should contact the person in charge of marriages at the building and give notice of marriage at your local register office. You can only be married in a church in a different district from where you both live if one or both parties usually worship in that building or there is no church of your religion in the district where you or the person you are marrying lives.

Weddings for people who are ill

If you are not able to attend a church or register office because of long term or serious illness, you can be married at home or in hospital. Please contact the Register Office on 0151 443 2900.  If you call out of office hours, please follow the instructions provided on the telephone message.

To give notice of your intention to marry or form a civil partnership

  • You must both be at least 18 years old.
  • You must both be free to marry or form a civil partnership.
  • You must both live in the same district as the register office where you are giving notice.

To give notice, you will need to book an appointment at your local register office. You can do this online or by phone. At your appointment, you will need to bring your identification documents and pay a fee.

Once you have given notice, your notice will be displayed on the public notice board at the register office for 28 days. After 28 days, you will be issued with a marriage or civil partnership schedule. This schedule is valid for 12 months from the date you gave notice.

On the day of your ceremony, you will need to bring your marriage or civil partnership schedule to the ceremony venue.
